THE PROJECT

The Scarborough General Hospital (SGH) began construction in 2000 and experienced several delays, setbacks and shutdowns in the ensuing years. When the China Railway Construction (Caribbean) Company Limited (CRCCCL) was brought in to finally complete the project in 2008, they required a local partner they could trust to help them navigate the local landscape as well as provide them with the technical expertise and direction needed to successfully complete the job once and for all.

The project specifications detailed a diverse range of general as well as specialized lighting solutions, hospital specific electrical equipment and a robust electrical distribution system that would meet the needs of a state of the art medical facility.

THE SOLUTION

TYE worked closely with CRCCCL in meeting the needs of the technical project. This included lighting layouts, lighting specifciation and lighting installation.

TYE’s  Multi-Mode Patient Care luminaire (MCL24MVRSE) was custom designed and manufactured to meet the requirements of the project, providing fingertip control to multiple levels of lighting to suit patient/physician needs.

All electrical distribution equipment which included 13.8kV Switchgear was supplied through our global partner Schneider Electric.

TYE designed and manufactured all Low Voltage Distribution equipment which included panelboards, Motor Control Centers (MCC) and isolated power panels with Line Isolation Monitoring.

The helipad at SGH was a critical feature of the project which would allow for fast airborne emergency transportation to /from the hospital in cases of serious illness or trauma. TYE Manufacturing was commissioned to design, supply and install the ultramodern LED helipad lighting system. The hospital’s elevated position and exposure to strong and gusty wind conditions provided a challenge for the design team. TYE collaborated closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Trinidad & Tobago (CAATT) and coordinated the design and installation to meet all necessary local and Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) guidelines and regulations for helipads.

The SGH project was CRCCCL’s first project in Trinidad & Tobago. With over 25 years in the electrical industry, TYE’s project team was able to support CRCCCL in adaptation and modification of the lighting and electrical controls aspects of its design-build plans to meet local regulations. TYE acted as primary liaison with the Government Electrical Inspectorate to ensure compliance to code. This resulted in minimum delays due to re-work and costs were kept within budget.

In 2010, TYE was awared the “Best Subcontractor for the Year 2009” by CRCCCL for its contibution of the Electrical Works on the Scarborough General Hospital Project.
